  • Yield: 6 caramel apples 1x
  • Category: Dessert
  • Method: Stovetop
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 small to medium apples (Granny Smith, Fuji, or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 (14-ounce) bag of soft caramel candies
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Wooden sticks or popsicle sticks
  • Wax paper or parchment paper
  • Optional Toppings:
  • Chopped peanuts or pecans
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Crushed cookies (Oreos or graham crackers)
  • Shredded coconut
  • Drizzled white or dark chocolate
  • Candy sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry apples thoroughly to remove wax. Insert wooden sticks into the tops and chill for 30 minutes.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt caramel candies with cream over low heat until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract if desired.
  3. Dip each apple into the melted caramel, turning to coat evenly. Let excess caramel drip off, then place on parchment paper.
  4. If adding toppings, roll the apples in nuts, candy, or sprinkles before the caramel sets.
  5. Let caramel apples cool at room temperature for 30 minutes or refrigerate for 15 minutes until firm.
  6. Decorate with chocolate drizzle or wrap in cellophane for gifts.

Notes

Use tart apples like Granny Smith for best flavor contrast. Make sure apples are completely dry before dipping to help caramel stick. Avoid waxy coatings by washing apples in hot water. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
